Mack medium duty demand on the rise

Mack MD Series is Growing in Popularity

In 2020, sales numbers were down for medium duty trucks. Jonathan Randall, Senior Vice President of North American Sales and Commercial Operations for Mack Trucks, stated the normal market for medium duty trucks is approximately 100,000. In 2020, the market number was around 70,000. But, in 2021, Randall predicts a market of around 87,000. In short, a steady rise in demand for these trucks is expected to occur.

The Popularity of the Mack MD Series

The Mack MD series trucks were officially introduced to the public at the 2020 Work Truck Show. These trucks are GHG2 1 certified fulfilling the greenhouse gas emissions requirements of the EPA.
The Class 6 Model has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 25,995 pounds. This means it can be driven by someone without a CDL. The Class 7 Model has a GVWR of 33,000 pounds. Each of these trucks features a 4×2 configuration and is exempt from the Federal Excise Tax of 12%.

The Versatility of Medium Duty Trucks

The versatility of the Class 6 and 7 Models is one of the main reasons why market numbers are projected to go up in 2021. Dry and refrigerated, dump, tank, stake, and flatbed are all suitable applications for these sturdy trucks.
In the course of a virtual update, Senior VP Jonathan Randall shared that sales are coming from many customers who need, “…dry van and reefer configurations.”
Mack Truck’s Vice President of Medium Duty Sales Dayle Wetherell reports that the Class 6 Model is selling better than the Class 7 Model. While both are popular, Wetherell explains, “The CDL (issue) is a strong influencer for customers affecting their ability to get drivers.”
