Volvo Trucks Upgrades I-Shift Transmission with Dual PTO

According to a new article in “Heavy Duty Trucking,” Volvo Trucks North America is introducing an upgraded version of their I-Shift automated manual transmission. This new gearbox features independent dual power take-off, giving outfitters more flexibility when fitting equipment.

The PTO system comes with either two independently-clutched DIN 5492 drives, or an SAE 1410 drive flange paired with a DIN 5462 drive. These factory-supplied ports and flanges are interchangeable with SAE 1310 flanges and both SAE-C and SAE-BB ports. Volvo offers everything needed to switch between drive systems through their parts distribution network.

These rearward-facing drives are separated by the vehicle’s center line, and allow enough space to use two separate hydraulic pumps. This spacing simplifies installation and service in the field. Each PTO can be used independently, or both can be active at the same time.

The I-Shift transmission is available in 12, 13 and 14 speed configurations with optional overdrive and 17.5:1 or 32:1 crawler gears. This gives manufacturers the ability to spec one transmission that works for both highway use and low speed maneuvers, while making it easier to upfit PTO components. The new drive system joins other PTO options for this transmission, including single, double and triple power take off options. PTOs carry the same warranty as the I-Shift transmission.

How will this system be used by truck outfitters? Andy Hanson, product marketing manager at Volvo Trucks North America, gave an example. Using this PTO system, one truck can switch between hauling portland cement and aggregate. Depending on the connection, the I-Shift’s PTO can drive a barrel for cement hauling, or a conveyor to unload gravel.
