Commercial Truck Technician Shortage

Commercial Truck Technician Shortage 2023 – We all Need Technicians

The Technician shortage across the Trucking Industry is real and ongoing. The current supply of Technicians trained and proficient with Advanced Diesel Technology just doesn’t meet the demand. The jobs no longer consist of simply “turning wrenches.” Technicians require training and knowledge of emerging technologies, electronics, computer systems, and software to diagnose and correct problems. It is a challenge affecting service levels for Dealers, Owner Operators, and Fleets alike.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Overall employment of heavy vehicle and mobile equipment service technicians is projected to grow 8 percent from 2021 to 2031, faster than the average for all occupations. About 23,900 openings for heavy vehicle and mobile equipment service technicians are projected each year, on average, over the decade.”

Working Toward Solutions

There is no short-term solution, and Industry Leaders must look ahead.  Vanguard Trucks Centers has spent several years developing and implementing plans to bring more candidates into the Technician pipeline.

First and foremost, we have developed partnerships and programs with major Technical Schools such as Western Tech, J-Tech, Universal Technical Institute, and the University of Northwestern OhioWe also acquired a full-time Recruiting Director to work hand-in-hand with these institutions and develop employment programs and opportunities.

Partnerships with these schools include:

  • Sponsoring classrooms
  • Serving on Advisory Counsels
  • Visiting campuses and attending Job Fairs and Graduations

If you are a student searching for a lucrative career, we suggest you check out one of these Technical Institutions and their Heavy Truck Technician programs.
